Another very popular birthday gift, especially for mums, comes from our We Are Family collection, particularly the personalised We Are Family cushion. The idea? For mums who love cooking or baking, the successful birthday gift is our 100% cotton embroidered apron. You can have it embroidered with the text of your choice.
The stunning gold rose with engraved case is also a big hit with mums, as well as more generally as a women’s birthday gift.
And finally, one of our best women’s gift ideas — perfect whether it’s for your Mum or your daughter — is the embroidered women’s dressing gown. An intergenerational gift, it is loved at any age and for any occasion.
Where do our birthday traditions come from?
Each year, on our birthday, we gather with our loved ones and celebrate having completed another journey around the sun. On this occasion, we blow out candles on a cake while our guests sing, and then they offer us birthday presents… But what are the origins of all these birthday traditions?
Apparently, the tradition of putting candles on a cake on one’s birthday comes from antiquity. In Ancient Greece, people went to the temple of Artemis on each anniversary of her birth to honour the goddess of hunting and the moon. To celebrate her, they brought a round cake symbolising the moon, surrounded by candles to imitate its glow. According to custom, after kneeling before the cake and saying a prayer to the goddess, the Greeks blew out the candles. Over time, this tradition evolved and today the popular custom is to make a wish before blowing out the candles on one’s birthday cake.
However, in the Middle Ages one did not celebrate one’s birthday — it was frowned upon. In fact, celebrating one’s date of birth was even associated with misfortune because in biblical texts, the only three mentions of birthdays refer to death. Thus, in Medieval Europe, people instead celebrated the feast day of the “Patron Saint” associated with one’s given name, or the anniversary of one’s death (symbolising the day of resurrection).
It was only in the 19th century that birthday celebrations reappeared, as the Catholic Church sought to shift attention away from the feast day of the saint, in order to weaken the overly strong cult of saints. It was at this point that the celebration of one’s birthday gradually gained importance. At first, it was the bourgeoisie who adopted the practice, and over the course of the century it spread to the working classes, eventually becoming the celebration we know today — with cake, candles, the “Happy Birthday” song, and birthday gifts (as well as the panic of not finding the perfect birthday gift idea).
