What is the origin of Christmas stockings? Long ago, Saint Nicholas wanted to help three poor sisters. Their father was despairing of not being able to provide them with a dowry so they could marry. Saint Nicholas heard about this story and, one winter night, he slipped down the chimney some gold coins which landed in the girls' stockings that they had left drying there overnight. The young girls discovered the happy surprise the next morning and were so grateful that they told this story to anyone who would listen. Thus, Christmas stockings made their entry into the Christmas tradition.
