What is the origin of Christmas stockings? Long ago, Saint Nicholas wanted to help three sisters in need. Their father was desperate as he could not provide them with a dowry so they could marry. Saint Nicholas heard of this story and, one winter night, he slipped down the chimney some gold coins that landed in the girls' stockings, which they had left to dry there overnight. The young girls discovered the happy surprise the next morning and were so grateful that they told this story to anyone who would listen. Thus, Christmas stockings entered the Christmas tradition.
