What is the origin of Christmas stockings? Long ago, Saint Nicholas wanted to help 3 sisters in need. Their father was desperate for not being able to provide them with a dowry so they could marry. Saint Nicholas heard of this story and, one winter night, he slipped down the chimney a few gold coins that landed in the young girls’ stockings, which they had left to dry there during the night. The young girls discovered the happy surprise the next morning and were so grateful that they told this story to anyone who would listen. Thus, Christmas stockings entered the Christmas tradition.
