The origin of the Christmas stocking

Where does the tradition of hanging Christmas stockings by the fireplace come from? This tradition is thought to originate from Saint Nicholas, the figure who inspired Father Christmas.

The story goes that Saint Nicholas wanted to help three sisters who lived in poverty. One winter night, while they were asleep, he dropped some gold into the stockings they had hung above the fireplace to dry. Over time, Christmas stockings became part of the traditional decorations, used for hiding surprises or small Christmas gifts.
